Performance Driving Seminars

Virginia International Raceway (VIR)

  • VIR's North Course is a technically challenging 19+ turn 2.3 mile long course with significant altitude and camber changes
  • World Class facility, voted one of the top 6 road courses in the country
  • Over 130' in elevation changes, many decreasing, increasing, on and off camber turns and undulations, a "roller coaster" track
  • Located in the rolling hills of southern Virginia; Alton, Virginia is 12 miles east of Danville, on the Virginia-North Carolina state line

Registration

  • MDA participants on average historically receive eight ~25 minute sessions (200 minutes) for the weekend of on-track time.
  • On-track time is weather and safety conditions permitting.
  • Assignments will be into 4 student run groups based on driver experience and vehicle type. For the North 2.3 mile course we average 25 students per run group, ensuring quality track time. Pictures on the main page included car show participants that were not in the drivers school.
  • Historically, MDA events sell out ahead of time, early registration is encouraged to ensure your participation. Note: eligibility is determined by hard copy receipt of your application and fee, sorted by postmark date.
  • Registration is available for non-Mazda owners/vehicles, the event is open to all manufacturers.

Instruction

  • Classroom sessions tailored to experience levels
  • In-car Instructors assigned to students for on-course activities
  • Many students qualify for solo driving after demonstrating basic safety skills and appropriate on-course behavior

Requirements

  • Students and Instructors drive their own vehicles
  • Participants must be 18 years of age
  • Possess a current drivers licenses
  • Maintain current automobile insurance

Equipment

  • Helmets required, Snell 95 or better rating
  • Long Sleeve shirts and long pants (cotton) are required while on track
  • Vehicles must pass a technical inspection before being allowed on the race track
  • The pre-inspection section of the Tech Form should be completed prior to the event.
  • Participants should ensure that their vehicles are in proper working order, you are responsible for completion of a detailed pre-inspection form ahead of time. 
  • Participant's vehicles that do not pass technical inspection will not be allowed to drive on the track until their vehicle is repaired and may have to forfeit their entrance fees. Technical Inspection forms are available online.

Rollbars required for Convertibles

  • Convertibles are required to be equipped with four point (or better) structural rollbars with substantial rearward bracing that passes through the decking and bolts to the uni-body structure of the vehicle itself. Bolt-on hardtops structurally do not qualify.
  • Rollbars are not required for Coupes or Sedans.
  • The top of your helmet must NOT exceed the height of the rollbar.
  • If any doubt, rollbar questions should be addressed during early registration, well in advance of the event.
  • Rollbar structure and height is mandatory. Driver's fees subject to forfeiture.

Damage to VIR Property

  • Respect VIR property to be invited back.
  • VIR Rules and Regulations are posted on the event page and should be read ahead of time.
  • An individual causing damage to VIR property or requiring excess consumables is directly liable for all costs involved. This is typical of driver education events.

Arrival Times

  • Technical Inspections start Friday night around 5:30PM to 7:00PM at VIR North Paddock tech barn. Tech inspections are strongly encouraged Friday evening to beat the rush Saturday morning.
  • Trailer drop-off times are restricted to 5:30PM to 6:30PM on Friday night at VIR. 
  • Arrive at the North paddock, Virginia International Raceway at 6:45 AM. Technical inspections resume Saturday morning at 7:00AM and close at 8:00AM for class.
  • Classroom instruction is mandatory each day. The morning driver's meetings are mandatory each day.
